Religion of Peace

OK, I'm not getting many comments lately, so I'm going to post on something topical and controversial just to stir things up.

Late last week, a perfectly nice, normal guy from South Charlotte, who recently graduated from UNC, decided to go berzerk and try to kill a bunch of kids at random with his SUV. He drove into the Pit, which is a gathering place on campus at UNC, and swerved and managed to hit 9 people. Luckily, he didn't manage to run anyone over or cause serious injuries. He got back on the road, and pulled over and called police to come and get him.

Oh, did I forget to mention he's a Muslim and claims he did this to get revenge on the US Government?

What makes people do things like this?

It's easy to say that it's Islam as a religion, since most of the violence that concerns us in the USA lately is at the hands of Middle Eastern Muslim terrorists. But I've visited Malaysia, which is an Islamic state, and this crap doesn't happen over there. Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians seem to actually get along there.

I'd like to say that it's the combo of Islam and oppressive governments, but this kid was raised in the USA all his life, though he was born in Iran.

I'd like to blame this on the brainwashing and programming by radical Islamic clerics, but this kid apparently studied the Koran on his own. Maybe future investigation will prove this assumption wrong, but the available evidence indicates that he worked alone.

Therefore, none of the conventional wisdom and rhetoric seem to apply to this case. This kid has been meek, quiet, and respectful during his time in court, although he is unapologetic for his actions. He has not displayed a load of anger and hatred in his demeanor at all.

For those of my friends and family in Malaysia, I'd like to try to explain how I think most Americans feel about Muslims at the moment. We know that our American culture is under attack by a lot of people who hate us, for no reason other than their religious leaders say that they should. These attackers have little or no regard for human life, which is something we can't comprehend in our society, as we have been taught that there is nothing more precious. These attackers claim they are Muslims and call for all Muslims to join their jihad. This makes us look on other Muslims with a slightly suspicious eye. After all, we were attacked and hurt by people that came to the US posing as students, taking advantage of our education system, under the guise of friendship, and betrayed our trust in the goodness of human nature. I think it's understandable that we are a little more wary since then.

I'd like to apologize to the millions of peaceful Muslims in America and the rest of the world for this behavior. However, I hope you are reasonable enough to understand that those of us who don't share your religion might not be as easy to get along with as we once were. You could help the situation yourselves quite a bit, you know, if you would speak up about how the actions of Al-Qaida, Hamas, etc are in conflict with Islam and show a little outrage towards them sometimes. Excommunicating them or something would go a long way, really it would. We'd certainly feel a bit more trusting if you were to do that. And by the way, your reaction to the cartoon thing? Not really helpful. Jesus taught his followers to "turn the other cheek", and most of the time, it remains good advice. Just shake it off - it was in bad taste, yes, but it was a tiny little newspaper from a country that doesn't have much in the way of entertainment. (Incidentally, the USA had nothing to do with it. Please address your complaints to Europe.)

Anyway, I've rambled on long enough about this subject. Hopefully, I've explained my perspective and we can have a nice discussion in the comments.

The DTH published a cartoon too... which I must say was a bit of an instigation... not that it's a good reason to turn an SUV on the Pit, but it was a bit obnoxious. I agree that the Religion of Peace is not acting very peaceful, but then, we can't go sticking our fingers in their eyes either.

I agree, but I think that's probably irrelevant. This guy didn't say that he did it in retaliation for cartoons. He said he did it to 'get revenge' on the government for its treatment of Muslims around the world.

I'm beginning to think that this was another case of a college student getting religion and 'hearing voices' rather than an act of Islamic terror.

Ditto on your last statement. His behavior (in my own well-trained medical opinion) is a bit erratic and... well... on the disturbed side of sanity.

I am really impressed that he could get through the Pit and only barely injure 9 people. That was a pretty careful drive-by. What a nice crazy man.

You forgot the ™ symbol. :-)

Yeah, this whole situation is pretty messed up. Of course, UNC is going over the whole "should we call this terrorism or not" waffling right now.

jason,

i really need to say my 2 cent worth here. look this kid is probably psycho and used islam as a shield to do his act. he is nothing but a sick opportinist.

living in malaysia when the country is 60% muslim and also having lived in a malay village, the islam that i know and exposed to is one of tolerance and peace. i studied islamic history in school, read the quran on my own and even dated a muslim guy in the past and i can tell you the insanity that happen around the world is caused by just a group of people who uses the religion to fuel its own selfish causes.

in islam, suicide are not allowed. suicide bomber is wrong. to wage a jihad war is not that simple but no people just think anything is against islam is jihad. even the death punishment for apostate is not clear. as for polygamy, out government have passed a controvertial law which puts the women in a worse position. polygamy according to the quran is not that simple and almost impossible because men can never act fair.

the interpretation of the quran has been so twisted by these charismatic individuals and it's scary. what is happening is similar to the periods of holy wars and spanish inquisition. islam is going through its dark ages now.

what the religion need is for the silent majority to stand up and be counted. the extremists are the minority but unfortunately circumstances and foreign poilicies of certain countries have given them the fuel for combat.

until certain policies towards palestine changes and until and unless the sane voice in the muslim world take charge, that religion will not find its renaissance and the violence will continue.

hopefully i have not offended anyone.

Well said, Sharon! I just wish the silent majority would come out and publicly condemn the extremists. Maybe change the name of the religion or something to separate themselves.

That's the problem with the "silent majority" though - they let the minority give it a bad name and drag them in the mud. Unfortunately, people who are not familiar with the entire group assume the mouthy ones are the majority.

you are right chris. the sane and moderate silent majority are not united in this.

the moderate muslim clerics from the various schools of thought should come together and issue a fatwa that these extremist/osama and company are not the voices/spokesmen for islam. but that is unlikely to happen.

the OIC can play a larger role but too much political niceties are stopping them from doing what they could and should.

it's frustrating to watch all these unending violence. it really leads to nowhere.

I don't know if it leads to nowhere, it's just that the somewhere it's going to isn't pleasant.
